The plane took off there in the early afternoon towards Vienna, but landed back in the German banking metropolis due to possible smoke formation on board, reports the magazine “Austrian Wings”, citing passengers.
According to the magazine, while the passengers had to leave the Airbus in Frankfurt, firefighters came on board and inspected the aircraft. Austria Airlines denied the report to the industry magazine that it was smoke and spoke in a statement of an “unusual smell event” and said the return was purely a precautionary measure. All passengers were also immediately rebooked, it said.
“No smoke development”
Austrian Airlines emphasized to the APA that the crew had never noticed any smoke or anything similar. “The machine was checked by technology in Frankfurt and transferred to Vienna this morning,” said a spokeswoman. “The reason for the smell was a defect in the APU (Auxiliary Power Unit), which could then be repaired on the ground.”
