Storm “Zoltan” raged in Upper Austria on Friday night with peaks of more than 100 km/h, forcing 230 fire departments to deploy around 400 missions and causing massive property damage and thousands of power outages. The day after, the emergency services have to clean up the “aftermath”, as Clemens Arzt, head of the state disaster control department, emphasized in the OÖN interview. 20 to 30 missions were still ongoing on Friday, the majority in the “hotspot” Bad Ischl. The Pfandl district in particular was hit by the hurricane-like gusts – 162.6 km/h at Feuerkogel as a peak.
“Flooding possible”
The severe weather warning is in effect at least until midnight on Sunday. “The wind remains at a high level of up to 90 km/h,” says Liliane Hofer, meteorologist at Geosphere Austria. In any case, the emergency services are prepared for the tasks ahead. “We hope that the firefighters can celebrate Christmas in peace,” says Arzt.
The storm is now moving from the south of Upper Austria specifically to the Mühlviertel. “The weather will not really calm down until next Tuesday,” says Hofer.
The snowfall limit will rise to 1000 meters today and the rain will subside somewhat as the day progresses. “Local flooding is possible in the Lower Mühlviertel,” says Reinhard Enzenebner, hydrologist for the state of Upper Austria.
Fallen trees due to the wind or soggy ground caused power outages in 35,000 households, says Wolfgang Denk, spokesman for Netz Oberösterreich, and he doesn’t expect any relief. “We expect disruptions to occur all the time,” says Denk. Every available employee will be on duty. “There will be between 100 and 150 people per night,” Denk promises that the disruption will be resolved quickly. “Unless it’s at night and we can’t go somewhere or the danger to ourselves is too great, then we have to wait for the morning hours.”
