Major fire on a farm in Schildorn: wooden beam hit firefighter in the head

The fire broke out around 2 a.m. on Saturday in the outbuilding of the more than 100-year-old farm. The wood chips are stored there on the first floor and are used to operate the heating on the ground floor. The 52-year-old Czech tenant noticed the flames in the apartment building. He immediately woke up the two owners, a 67-year-old woman and a 72-year-old man, and made sure everyone could leave the house in time. At this point, the outbuilding was already fully engulfed in flames.

Firefighter fell unconscious

Nine fire departments responded to the scene with 130 helpers and 16 vehicles. In order to extinguish the burning wood chips, the emergency services had to open the building on the south side with an excavator. The charred wooden beams of the roof structure were also torn down. A falling wooden beam hit a 34-year-old firefighter in the head. He then fell unconscious to the ground. He was carried away with a spine board by the paramedics and his fire department colleagues and was given first aid by an emergency doctor. The 34-year-old was injured to an unspecified degree and was taken to the Ried hospital. The 52-year-old tenant also had to be treated in hospital with suspected smoke poisoning, but has since been released home.

Backburning as the cause of the fire

An expert from the fire prevention office and police investigators examined the scene of the fire on Saturday morning. The cause of the fire was determined to be a backfire in the automatic loading device of the wood chip firing system. The backfire was triggered by a brief power outage.
