The 42-year-old Uzbek citizen drove his truck on the A9 towards Wels around 6 a.m. on Saturday. Due to storm damage, the motorway was closed between the Klaus and Inzersdorf junctions and traffic was rerouted via the B138. The 42-year-old therefore drove off the A9 in Klaus. However, following the instructions on his navigation device, he steered the truck back onto the motorway via the Klaus junction. He ignored the red lights in the ramp area.
In front of the Hungerbichel Tunnel he stopped his heavy vehicle because of the red light. The 42-year-old then drove via a reversal into the oncoming lane and against the direction of travel in the left lane and despite oncoming traffic through the Hungerbichel and Kienberg tunnels. The driver also had to stop because of the tunnel barriers, which were triggered immediately. The man’s driver’s license was confiscated and he is being reported.
