The Supreme Court of Justice of Bolivia ratified the 10-year prison sentence against former president Jeanine Áñez after rejecting the appeal in the case called Coup II, from 2019.

Áñez was found guilty of the crimes of breach of duties and resolutions contrary to the Constitution and the laws, the Europa Press news agency reported.

The Prosecutor’s Office accused her of assuming the presidency of the Senate and, consequently, the presidency of Bolivia, in November 2019, without meeting constitutional requirements.

The complaint in this case was presented by the president of the Senate, Andrónico Rodríguez, in April 2021, when Áñez was already being prosecuted for the crimes of sedition, conspiracy and terrorism following the complaint of former deputy Lidia Patty.

Upon learning of the ruling, Alain de Canedo, Áñez lawyer, said that “the internal instances are over,” which means it is time to turn to international justice.

“And in this we can go to both the United Nations and the OAS (Organization of American States),” he explained.
