The striking house in Point, between Untermühl and Exlau, on the Danube, stood for 502 years, since 1521. It has hosted well-known personalities over the centuries, such as peace researcher and writer Bertha von Suttner and Nobel Prize winner for literature Heinrich Böll. Until December 24th. Around 4 a.m. masses of earth and rubble thundered down the steep terrain, leaving a trail of destruction behind. The house was completely destroyed. The road leading past was also buried under the mudflow. The emergency services that were alerted worked until the morning to make the road passable again.
The devastating landslide occurred in Point, between Untermühl and Exlau:
The heavy rainfall of the past few days has softened the ground, says Mayor Franz Hofer (ÖVP). However, he does not currently believe that any other buildings are in danger. Smaller rockfalls occur again and again in the region along the Danube. But the historic house was in a prominent location, according to the local boss.
Homeowner Klaus Lorenz stands in front of the rubble of his property – and is still relieved that everything turned out well. “The most important thing is that nothing happened to anyone,” he says. The house was still used sporadically by the family. For example at Christmas. Even though the house was destroyed: “We’re just happy that no one was in there.” A little Christmas miracle of your own for the family.
