Australia, Japan, Taiwan and then – a brief shock – nothing at all for an hour: As it has done for 68 years, US air traffic control began tracking Santa Claus’ celestial gift tour on Sunday. This time, however, there was a breakdown, which, fortunately for the children, was quickly remedied.
From his base at the North Pole, Santa Claus’ reindeer-driven sleigh flew over the Indonesian capital Jakarta at 4:38 p.m. (CET), according to the North American Air Defense Command (NORAD), which is responsible for the USA and Canada. He had already distributed more than 1.5 billion gifts in Australia and Oceania.
According to NORAD, Santa’s sleigh is faster than the US Air Force’s F-15 fighter jets. But the older gentleman, dressed entirely in red, slowed down as a precaution “so that we can escort him,” assured his military companions. The fact that this succeeds at all is thanks to the sensors in Rudolph the reindeer’s red nose.
NORAD has been tracking Santa Claus on his journey around the world since 1955. At that time, an incorrect telephone number was accidentally given in a newspaper advertisement for a call campaign for children: the little ones’ calls ended up with the US air defense instead of Santa Claus. In order not to disappoint the children, the then commander instructed his staff to follow Santa on the radar screens and keep the children informed.
Curious children can now find out about the current location of their reindeer sleigh via an interactive website and a telephone hotline. This year, however, the tracker briefly failed, leaving children in the Pacific in the dark about the exact location of Santa’s sleigh.
“Hey Santa trackers! We’re having some technical difficulties with our tracking map, but Santa is still flying! Next destination is the Fiji Islands,” the professional trackers explained on their Facebook page. An hour later they gave the all-clear and the pursuit of Santa could continue.
