There are missions that leave even experienced firefighters shaking their heads. The forces of the Walding volunteer fire department, which had been in operation almost continuously in the past few days due to storms and floods, were called to one of these on Christmas Day. A kayaker apparently thought it was a good idea to go on a tour in the flood-prone Rodl.
Stranded on island
It’s lucky that nothing worse happened during this venture: The middle-aged Upper Austrian ended up stranded with his paddle boat on a small island near the town of Rodl in the municipality of Walding (Urfahr-Raum district) and was unable to go forward or back. Walkers became aware of the water sportsman’s predicament and raised the alarm.
25 comrades from the FF Walding responded under the keyword “rescue, person in the water”. The kayaker was able to be brought to shore using a lifebuoy and ladders. He survived the incident uninjured. After around an hour and a half, the fire brigade was able to arrive again.
