More cars than residents – it doesn’t have to stay that way

Danube-Bohemian Forest. In the Danube-Bohemian Forest region there are more cars than residents, as statistical data shows. Car sharing is therefore a good way to reduce the resulting CO2 emissions. But the Mühlviertler’s own skepticism may still prevent some people from testing the shared car.

A Mühlferdl user explains why it’s worth trying out the offer at least once: Beatrix Unger from Haslach has been a Mühlferdl member for a total of six months and hasn’t had her own car for three months. Before that, she had already booked a trial membership for three months. Coupled with the climate ticket, it quickly became clear that the car sharing car worked well. After registering at the Leader office, things really started: “It was very easy for me to switch because I already had an electric car. I always take the train for longer distances anyway. I mainly need the Mühlferdl when I need something needs to be transported, for larger purchases or when traveling to see the grandchildren,” says Unger.

Climate ticket and Mühlferdl

The woman from Haslach mainly uses the bus service, which is right on her doorstep in the town center. “But there are routes, for example to Peilstein or Julbach, where it is more difficult to get to the public. Then I just book the Mühlferdl in good time and take it.”

Booking is easily done online: “For long-term appointments, such as doctor’s appointments, I book the car as soon as the appointment is made. When it comes to shopping, it’s not so important whether I do it in the morning or in the afternoon, I do it here “I’ll contact you based on availability,” she says. Of course, this is easier for a pensioner than for a working person. But on weekdays the car is very readily available; on weekends it can happen that it is taken. You just have to have a certain degree of flexibility – or book it for a longer period of time.

Cheaper than owning a car

The costs are clearly lower than owning a car. “Especially if you honestly calculate how much it costs to have your own car, it is clearly much cheaper, even if I have to pay for the standing time,” says the Haslach resident. According to the Austrian Transport Club, two cars cost an average of 858 euros per month, while one car costs 514 euros per month. Car sharing is particularly worthwhile for those who don’t drive often.

Longer journeys are also no problem: “I like going to the opera in Vienna, but when I arrive in Linz by train late in the evening, I no longer have a bus to Haslach. I’m happy to accept that I’ll also have to pay for the standing time here “Even then it’s still cheaper than having your own car.” By the way, membership at Mühlferdl costs 30 euros per year. This includes 48 hours. When these are used up, the hour costs 4.40 euros. Unger’s tip: “If you live centrally, the Mühlferdl is the perfect second car or first car. If you only need the car for fixed appointments or shopping, then there is no better solution.”

You don’t have to be afraid of an electric car. Many people even find it easier to handle than with combustion engines. And of course the Mühlferdl is always charged, you always have a car that’s ready to drive, you don’t have to pay for insurance and taxes, nor for charging if you can get by with an uncharged car.
