NEWCASTLE. Premier League football from 1.30 p.m. until shortly before 11 p.m. almost without interruption – that’s what the traditional stands for “Boxing Day” in England, which has its origins in the Victorian era. It was common practice for wealthy people to wrap Christmas presents for their servants and poorer people. Employees traditionally had the day off on December 26th and received a Christmas package for themselves and their families from their employers. Nowadays the crowds flock to the stadiums.
Until the 1950s, a full day of matches in the top English league was played on Christmas Day, December 25th. Today’s Premier League club Brentford, for example, advertised with the sexist slogan: “Men go to the game while women cook in the kitchen.” After the visit to the stadium there was traditionally a feast.
For logistical reasons, St. Stefani Day came into play in the mid-1960s: employees in local public transport were given the day off on December 25th, so buses and subways didn’t run.
The “Boxing Day” 1963, exactly 60 years ago, will probably be anchored in the history books forever. There will never be a flood of goals like back then, you don’t need to be a prophet. A look at the crazy results: Blackpool 1-5 Chelsea, Burnley 6-1 Manchester United, Fulham 10-1 Ipswich, Leicester 2-0 Everton, Liverpool 6-1 Stoke, Nottingham Forest 3 Sheffield United: 3, Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 Bolton, West Bromwich 4-4 Tottenham, West Ham 2-8 Blackburn, Wolverhampton 3-3 Aston Villa.
According to Adam Riese, he scored 66 direct hits in ten games and an incredible average of 6.6 goals. A magical day for goal getters around the world.
Hat trick and surprise
Yesterday’s overture was also quite spectacular, the outcome surprising. Relegation candidate Nottingham Forest duped Champions League participants Newcastle United at their home St. James’ Park. The outsider didn’t let a 0-1 deficit throw him off course. Of all people, 32-year-old ex-Newcastle striker Chris Wood became the match winner, not celebrating his hat trick (45th + 1, 53rd, 60th) in a lavish manner, but rather showing respect for his former employer, for whom he worked from January 2022 to January had been on the ball in 2023 showed.
