Outside the fog zones on the Inn, the Danube and in the central area, meteorologists expect lots of sun and mild temperatures until the weekend.

Anyone who has registered for vacation between Christmas and New Year can be happy. “Up to and including Friday there will be a lot of sun and mild temperatures, especially in the mountains,” says Geosphere meteorologist Alexander Ohms. However, along the Inn and the Danube as well as in the central area, the sun rarely comes out. “The fog often persists there until the afternoon.” The good news: it will remain dry and calm across the country at least until the weekend.

Longer drying phase required

The river levels are still high after the heavy rainfall, the soil is extremely saturated and the slopes are unstable. In order for nature to fully recover, the precipitation-free phase should ideally last “a few weeks,” says the meteorologist. But this calculation won’t quite work out.

A change in the weather on Saturday will bring more rain and wind. Above 1000 meters altitude, snowfall is to be expected. “But significantly less than at Christmas,” says Ohms. The bad weather phase is unlikely to last long. From the current perspective, things will clear up again on Saturday afternoon, so the last day of the year should be “relatively friendly”. It could rain again on New Year’s Eve – or not. “It’s still very difficult to predict,” says Ohms. “It won’t be a clear, cold night, that’s for sure.”

The sky is already starry from Wednesday to Thursday. In the north and southeast of the country and south of Lake Traunsee there will be “a wonderful day” with highs between six and ten degrees Celsius. “It is of course warmer up in the sun than down in the fog,” says Alexander Ohms. “The next few days are very suitable for winter sports. With the mild weather, it feels like spring skiing.” At an altitude of 2,000 meters, Ohms expects temperatures to be around three degrees plus on Thursday, and at an altitude of 1,700 meters around seven degrees.

17.8 degrees on Christmas Day

The weather was exceptionally warm on Christmas Day. In Weyer, 17.8 degrees were measured on Christmas Day. According to Geosphere Austria, the community in the Steyr-Land district was the third warmest place in all of Austria. “Even though it is now cooling down a bit due to the weaker wind, it remains very mild for this time of year,” says Ohms. By the way, it was a good ten degrees less in Weyer at Easter this year. But that is not unusual. “The likelihood that it will be colder at Easter than at Christmas is generally quite high because the colder air comes in spring.”
