They were the big winners on the north bank: a year after they were founded, the Greens in St. Wolfgang won four mandates in the local council elections in September 2021. They received 15.47 percent of the 1,623 votes, meaning they immediately left the FPÖ (9.43 percent) behind.
Now the western shore of Lake Wolfgang could also become greener: On March 10, 2024, the citizens of St. Gilgen (Salzburg-surroundings district) will re-elect their municipal council and have one more option on the list. For the first time, a Green Party list is up for election there, founded this year just a few days before Christmas.
Their top candidate is Daniela Neuhofer, is 46 years old and works as a dental assistant. And: She already sits on the local council, but for a different party. Neuhofer has been active as a non-party representative for the SPÖ since 2019.
Neuhofer says she actually wanted to leave local politics. However, new perspectives have emerged at Green Party events and in discussions with those responsible.
Neuhofer is convinced that St. Gilgen can still improve “a lot” when it comes to climate protection. In the future, the Greens also want to work for energy communities, photovoltaics, public green spaces and citizen participation in the community.
Arguable HR representative
Also on board at Wolfgangsee, in second place on the list, is Sigi Gierzinger, who is best known in Salzburg as a controversial teacher personnel representative.
In October 2014 he left the Christian Teachers’ Association and the ÖAAB and founded the Salzburg teachers’ association “Salve” in December of the same year. During the corona pandemic, Gierzinger, as chairman of the staff representative for compulsory school teachers, criticized the unclear lockdown regulations in schools as a “declaration of bankruptcy” of education policy.
Now he wants to bring a “fresh, green wind” to St. Gilgen. A lot will also change on the southeastern shore of Lake Wolfgangsee in the coming year: after 20 years, there will be a change of mayor in the municipality of Strobl (Salzburg-surroundings district).
Josef Weikinger (VP), elected to office for the fourth time in a row in 2019, will no longer be running on March 10, 2024. This decision is said to have been preceded by differences of opinion. In his place, local councilor and builder Christof Hillebrand is running as the ÖVP candidate.
On the way to the mayor’s office, he will definitely have to get past Harald Humer: The 54-year-old was once again nominated as the top candidate by the SPÖ in Strobl and wants to make his defeat in 2019 forgotten. At that time, incumbent Weikinger clearly won with 74.3 percent.
