Florida advances trade and cooperation agreements with China

Mayor Guillermo López and a delegation of businessmen from the department toured nine Chinese cities, in which agribusiness was the protagonist.

The mayor of Florida, Guillermo López, carried out a diplomatic tour of nine cities in China together with a delegation of businessmen, with the aim of deepening relations between the Asian country and the department of Uruguay, within the framework of the celebrations of the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between both countries.

After the president’s visit Luis Lacalle Pou to his peer in China, Xi Jinping —with all the achievements obtained in terms of deepening the important commercial link that exists between both nations—, the Florida delegation toured seven provinces of the Asian country and held different meetings that allowed it to strengthen and expand trade negotiations, mainly through agricultural products.

“Florida is willing to work with China to take the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership as a new starting point to improve bilateral relations and enrich cooperation between the two countries,” said López, and highlighted the possibility of trading “more high-quality agricultural and livestock products and products with high added value.” He also encouraged more chinese companies to invest and develop in Uruguay.

The agenda of the Florida delegation began in the country’s capital, Beijing, and continued for Shanghai, Zhenjiang, Hefei, Zhengzhou, Luoyang, Kaifeng, Lanzhou and Shenyang. As expressed by the Municipality, “the ambitious and extensive agenda gave the opportunity to generate new contacts with local authorities and companies,” continuing a link between the Uruguayan department and the Asian country that began with a diversity of trade and cooperation agreements of 2006.

The mayor was accompanied by representatives of the Florida Rural Association; the Florida Milk Producers Society; Fertile iron; Albanian Brothers; Lebak Laboratory; Florida Satellite; Florida Free Zone; Sweet Queen Dragon Group; and Florida Refrigerator. The objective was to have different sectors characteristic of the department such as agriculture, agriculture, dairy, meat, biotechnology and logistics, among others.

Official mission achievements

The agribusiness were great protagonists of the conversations held throughout the official mission in China. According to the mayor Guillermo Lopez, “There was talk of 10,000 heads of cattle and there were specific consultations for 3,000 heads.”

There were also “surveys” regarding bellies corresponding to the livestock sector, as well as by genetic embryos “which is part of Uruguayan work, but with applied knowledge and added value from genetics.”

The Florida mayor also highlighted the queries received in relation to the milk production and of slaughtered meatin addition to considering as “very interesting what the opening of the sport horse, with the possibility, above all, of endurance horses”; an opening that arises from the protocol signed by Lacalle Pou and Xi Jinping in November.

At the institutional level, meanwhile, the twinning agreements already achieved with the province of Gansu and Liaoning and the sister city of Shenyang; Work also continued on the intention of twinning with the city of Kaifeng.

The Florida delegation also made progress regarding sports, cultural and educational cooperation agreements.

The possibility of different Chinese factories importing unique products from electric mobility to the Uruguayan market was another of the topics on the discussion table in the Asian country.
