It was only by chance that a 27-year-old in the US state of Indiana was saved after being trapped in his pickup truck for almost a week following an accident. Two men who were fishing on a river almost 40 miles southeast of Chicago discovered the accident car under a bridge on Interstate 94, local police announced on Tuesday (local time).
According to this, last Wednesday the car left the motorway for an unknown reason, fell down a ravine and became wedged under the bridge in such a way that it could not be seen from the busy street above.
While looking for a fishing spot, he discovered something shiny, said Mario Garcia, who was fishing with his son-in-law. At first he thought the man in the pickup was dead. “The moment I touched his shoulder, he turned around and woke up. He was alive and very happy to see us,” Garcia told reporters .
According to police, the seriously injured man was unable to access his cell phone to call for help after his accident. To survive, he drank rainwater. “He said he tried to scream and shout, but no one could hear him,” Garcia said.
After the two men found him, the 27-year-old was flown to a hospital in the nearby city of South Bend with serious injuries. It was a “miracle” that he survived, an Indiana State Police official told reporters. The mild temperatures over the Christmas holidays were crucial for this.
With regard to an announced drop in temperature on Wednesday night, the police officer emphasized that he did not believe that the man would have survived another night.
