Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro has signed a decree to protect public safety on New Year’s Eve. From December 31st to January 1st, 2024 at 6:00 a.m., there is a ban on shops, bars and outdoor stands selling and serving drinks, including alcohol and spirits, in glass bottles, sealed cans or plastic bottles.

It is also forbidden to consume any kind of drinks on the street. The use and possession of pepper spray is also prohibited. Failure to comply with this regulation will be punished with a fine of between 25 euros and 500 euros, the municipality said.

Similar measures were also taken in Trieste. Glass bottles and alcoholic drinks are prohibited in the central Piazza Unità d’Italia on New Year’s Eve. This was stipulated in an ordinance issued by the city administration. Bringing or possessing items such as umbrellas, folding seats, selfie sticks and pepper sprays is also prohibited.
