The Minister of the Interior admitted that Uruguay has a problem with homicides

The minister of Inside of Republic, Nicolas Martinelli, spoke about the nine homicides that occurred this long weekend of Christmas and admitted that Uruguay has a problem with homicides, although he stressed that at this time there is a greater escalation of violence.

During the long weekend there were 9 homicides those that took place in the country, among them that of a 14-year-old teenager who ended up shot due to a fight with shots between criminals in the Peñarol neighborhood and the triple crime in Estación Floresta.

The Minister of the Interior admitted in an interview with Radio Sarandí that “it was a weekend and violent”, although he clarified that these episodes tend to occur on these dates. Based on international studies, the leader said that “in the months of December and January there is an escalation of violence, due to greater consumption of alcohol and drugs, and emotional family issues.”

However, regarding the nine episodes that occurred this weekend, the minister assured that “there was a high level of clarification.” “Almost all those involved are in prison or formalized or identified, waiting for Prosecutor’s Office give us the arrest warrant. “Very high clarification helps lower the level of impunity of those involved,” she remarked.

A problem with homicides

Regarding the violence experienced this weekend, which has been repeated for some time and is the focus of discussion in the government, Martinelli said that “in Uruguay and in the world the general increase in the violence” and not only in the country.

“We have a problem focused on the homicides, they go down robberies, thefts and rustlers, but we have a problem in homicides,” explained the minister, who added that in other crimes, tolerable levels were not reached either.

Meanwhile, he acknowledged that they have “a specific problem and we take focused measures to try to reduce homicides,” among which is the restructuring of the department of homicides.

“Before each area had its department, today there is only one homicide department that began working three or four months ago and improved the clarification rate, which reduces the feeling of impunity,” explained the minister.
