The idea for my own Guglwald book came about during a reading by author Julia M. Moser at the Hotel Guglwald. Hotel manager Alexander Pilsl had long wanted to address his company’s historic past in a book: “As a hotelier, you naturally always want to create new experiences for your guests. So we thought about how we could make scenes and elements from the book come alive in the hotel “With Julia, who also works as Chef de Rang in our restaurant, we had exactly the right partner who was already very familiar with the hotel.”

Intensive research

Nevertheless, intensive research into “What the Winter Gave Us” was necessary in order to portray the history of the house and the border region on the Iron Curtain as truthfully as possible. Although the plot and protagonists were deliberately chosen to be fictional, the setting used was nothing less than the hotel in Guglwald, then Baumanngut, in the 1950s. This much can be revealed: In this post-war novel, feelings balance on thin ice in the shadow of the Iron Curtain.

Scavenger hunt included

Guglwald is not only the setting for this novel, elements that appear in the book are now kept in the rustic border hut in Guglwald and invite you to go on a scavenger hunt. The novel itself serves as a treasure map that provides the right clues for the scavenger hunt and invites you on a journey of discovery to the Hotel Guglwald. The first public presentation naturally took place in the Hotel Guglwald. The in-house library offered the perfect space for this occasion. The novel can also be ordered online via the hotel website.

A short reading sample: “Icy wind whips around the Baumanngut while Johanna fights for her happiness in the snowy borderland. When a snowstorm buries the estate in Guglwald, an idiosyncratic society involuntarily comes together. The storm brings danger, closeness and a mysterious intruder . Cut off from the outside world, trust and love are put to the test. Guests become friends. Friends become strangers…”
