The use of face masks in health centers is no longer mandatory

He Ministry of Public Health (MSP) updated control measures for the virus Covid-19eliminating the obligation to use face mask required to enter the different health centers throughout the national territory, with some exceptions.

He infectologist Julio Medinadirector of the Chair of Infectious Diseases at the University of the Republic (UdelaR) confirmed through his X account (formerly Twitter) that the MSP had annulled the mandatory use of face masks.

According to the decree (Ref. 12-001-3-7210-2023): “In health establishments: the mandatory use of a mask upon entry is discontinued.” So now, only “health personnel must use a mask, according to risk activity and following usual protocols.”

Over the course of the year, the infectious disease specialist had reflected through that social network that it was necessary to “make the use of masks more flexible in hospital environments,” since “health professionals need a break before respiratory viruses and Covid-19 increase again.”

“They have only created an unnecessary barrier”

Last Tuesday, he assured in discomfort for health professionals who have been using them for almost 4 years and all this without any additional benefit.

Likewise, he stated that the use of face mask should be limited to “people with symptoms of respiratory infection”; “people who, due to their clinical condition and history, may progress to a serious infection, such as severely immunosuppressed patients (kidney, liver, lung, heart transplant recipients, hemato-oncology patients)”; and health professionals in certain circumstances.
