Sunny prospects for Upper Austria’s skiers
Before Christmas, the slopes on the Feuerkogel were closed due to the violent storm. Now there are good piste conditions here again.

While the storm “Zoltan” around Christmas put a lot of demands on emergency services and many ski slopes in the country were affected, the weather in Upper Austria is currently showing its sunny side. “Not much will change until Saturday,” says Maximilian Sterz from GeoSphere Austria.

According to the meteorologist, double-digit temperatures in the lowlands are still the order of the day, as is hardly any significant amounts of precipitation. “It’s definitely too warm for this time of year,” says Sterz, giving the Upper Austrian ski areas little hope of fresh snow before the turn of the year: “Unfortunately, the ski areas have to live with what they currently have.”

Very good slope conditions

As a broadcast from the OÖNachrichten (see below) shows, there is no fear of the mild temperatures in Hinterstoder, just as in Hochficht. Quite the opposite: Those responsible for the ski areas in Upper Austria are happy about thousands of enthusiastic winter sports enthusiasts, beautiful weather and the best piste conditions. The prospect that up to five degrees will be measured at 1500 meters doesn’t change this.

“The snow is compact and easy to grip, these are exactly the conditions that are necessary for a good slope,” says Helmut Holzinger from the Hinterstoder-Wurzeralm ski area, where the many day guests yesterday had to be patient when looking for parking spaces. The operators of the cable car holding are also happy about the large number of visitors in the Dachstein-Krippenstein-Feuerkogel area: “We were able to open almost all of the slopes on December 8th. Around Christmas it was only difficult because of the heavy gusts of wind. But now all the lifts are open again Operations and all slopes are open,” says managing director Rupert Schiefer.

Hinterstoder

When the lifts in the Hinterstoder-Wurzeralm ski area were switched on yesterday at 8.30 a.m., winter sports enthusiasts were already lining up. “Everyone wants to start as early as possible and enjoy the wonderful weather and the slopes,” says managing director Helmut Holzinger. “On days like that we would need double the parking space capacity.”

Since Christmas, around 9,000 guests per day have been active in Hinterstoder and on the Wurzeralm on the 40 kilometers of slopes. “We know this from previous years: the time between Christmas and New Year’s Eve is very popular,” says Holzinger.

Ski courses in particular are currently increasingly taking place in Hinterstoder. “The snow is very compact. The clubs come to us with more than 100 children. We are very happy about that, after all it means that winter sports are also important for the little ones.”

Kasberg

“There are already over 2,000 skiers in the area,” said operations manager Anton Rainer, who was pleased about the influx at Kasberg yesterday morning. The slopes, twelve out of 20 of which were open yesterday, have recovered well after the storm, as Rainer reports.

The mild weather forecast for the next few days and the lack of fresh snow are being noted with calm in the winter sports region. “We can’t do anything about the weather. Luckily it cools down again at night,” says the operations manager. The low temperatures would make the slopes firmer again.

However, there is currently no valley run for ski fans in the 23 kilometers of slopes area. “The rain didn’t play into our hands. If it gets cold again, we’ll be ready to start making snow and grooming,” assures Rainer.

Dachstein/Krippenstein

The Upper Austrian cable car holding company currently has almost 10,000 daily guests in the Dachstein West, Dachstein Krippenstein and Feuerkogel ski areas.

“The storm just before Christmas was particularly problematic on Krippenstein and Feuerkogel, but now we were able to open all the slopes again,” says managing director Rupert Schiefer, who is very satisfied with the current snow situation and mood in the ski area: “Last year it was everywhere “We’re talking about white ribbons on which the winter sports enthusiasts were traveling. We can’t complain at the moment, the booking situation is also very good.”

When the athletes enjoy the sun in front of the huts in temperatures above zero, it is more reminiscent of spring skiing. “Let’s see what it looks like in the coming days, but we are very confident,” says Schiefer.

Starstone

Not only the skiers are currently in a good mood in Bad Leonfelden, but also the employees of Sternstein Lifte GesmbH. “There are a lot of people there. We have nice weather and all three slopes are open,” said cashier Gerhard Hochreiter to OÖNachrichten yesterday.

The last snowfall was on December 22nd, but even in the valley at around 800 meters there is 40 centimeters of white splendor. Enough to keep operations going. In addition, the sub-zero temperatures at night would provide welcome support for snow preservation, as Hochreiter says.

Only the onset of rain could bring regular operations in the Mühlviertel to a standstill. “If it doesn’t rain, we’ll ski through the entire school holidays until Epiphany,” says the lift employee at the ski area with five kilometers of slopes.

Hochficht/Bohemian Forest

Gerald Paschinger painted a positive mood yesterday. “We are completely at capacity, all nine lifts are in operation and the weather is fantastic,” says the managing director of the Hochficht-Bergbahnen. The ski area in the Rohrbach district also survived the recent stormy period well.

Paschinger is relaxed about the mild temperatures until the turn of the year. “Of course we would prefer it if it were colder, but we don’t have to be afraid,” explains the managing director and hopes that the weather will change again soon.
