Inspired by the film “Braveheart”, which he had just seen, the SPÖ National Councilor and mayor of Trumau in Lower Austria Andreas Kollross jokingly thought about the decision on a “Ius primae noctis” on Facebook. According to this, the mayor would have the right to spend the first night with the bride at weddings in his municipality. SPÖ leader Andreas Babler condemned the trivialization of violence against women and demanded an apology.
“Can you actually have such a ‘Ius primae noctis’ decided for the mayor by means of a local council resolution? Just asking out of interest. No self-interest whatsoever, of course,” Kollross wrote on his Facebook page. In the same post, he clarified that it was a joke “out of short-term boredom.”
Babler, however, found the posting anything but funny. “Playing down violence against women must be condemned in the strongest possible terms and has no place in the SPÖ,” wrote the SPÖ leader on X (formerly Twitter). He fights any form of trivialization of sexism and an apology from Kollross is “the least we expect.”
Criticism on Twitter
National Council members Meri Disoski and Ralph Schallmeiner (both Greens) also condemned the posting on .
Post has now been deleted
Kollross has now deleted his Facebook post and apologized on X for his “inappropriate posting”. It was clear to him that the posting was not okay and he understood what the content triggered. “I would like to apologize for this and act accordingly in the future,” wrote the SPÖ National Council.
