The state administrative court is currently negotiating whether the Westring opponents have collected enough signatures for a referendum on the motorway project and whether any missing ones can still be submitted. As reported, an alliance of 23 initiatives submitted almost 10,000 signatures in the spring, but the magistrate only recognized just under 4,900 of them as valid. Too few, because around 6,600 would be necessary for the mandatory survey to be carried out.

Citizens’ instead of referendum initiative
But the process is apparently not going according to the initiatives’ ideas. According to her statement, the judge denied them the character of a referendum initiative and downgraded them to a citizens’ initiative that only aimed to submit an application for a referendum to the local council. “With this trick, the judge ignores our request to be able to collect signatures and at the same time throws thousands of valid signatures into the bin,” it said in a release. He also applies the one-year limit for collecting signatures from a citizens’ initiative to the referendum – in contrast to the magistrate.
