In addition to incidents in the home, numerous incidents occur, especially in public, due to, among other things, the use of pyrotechnic objects. In addition, there is still a generally increased risk in Austria this year due to a current threat assessment by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution and the continued increased terror alert level. Particular attention is therefore paid to the New Year’s Eve trail in Vienna’s city center.
In order to accomplish this, additional forces from the federal states of Lower Austria, Salzburg, Carinthia and Burgenland will be called upon to provide support. The protective measures required there are carried out in close coordination with the organizer. The security personnel deployed at the New Year’s Eve trail will carry out access controls. In addition, the Vienna State Police Directorate announced that it was also authorized to carry out search controls.
No category 2 pyrotechnics in the local area
The police and Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) once again pointed out that pyrotechnics from category 2 – this includes flash bangers, Swiss firecrackers, all rockets, firecrackers, jumping wheels or similar – are expressly prohibited in the local area. “These are not mischievous pranks,” said Karner at a press conference in Vienna. The police will do everything they can “to ensure the safety of those who want to celebrate peacefully.” In the past few weeks, checks have been carried out, especially at the border crossings into the Czech Republic, and 20,000 illegal pyrotechnic items that were supposed to be brought into the country were confiscated.
Absolute bans on the use of firecrackers, bangers, etc. apply near gas stations, churches and hospitals. “In Vienna, the New Year’s Eve trail and well-known hotspots are patrolled and secured,” said Federal Police Director Michael Takacs at a press conference at the Interior Ministry.

Most accidents and dangerous incidents involving pyrotechnic products are due to carelessness, inattention, improper use or misuse. In particular, the prohibited and careless handling of pyrotechnics, usually purchased from abroad, without the necessary quality and approval criteria, poses great potential for danger. If the provisions of the Pyrotechnics Act are violated, the user also faces administrative penalties of up to 3,600 euros.
Meanwhile, the police in the west of the country are also preparing for New Year’s Eve. The Tyrolean executive branch, for example, has a special operational concept. The main focus is on “Mountain New Year’s Eve” in the state capital Innsbruck, where thousands of visitors are expected. This includes an increased police presence “especially in inner city areas through sufficient (additional) uniformed and civilian forces,” as it said in a broadcast. More than 160 additional officers are deployed across Tyrol. In addition, a police video surveillance zone and a search order were issued as part of “Mountain New Year’s Eve”.
