The chances are good that the series of false alarms in the asylum center in Steyregg will come to an end. Although the volunteer fire department had to arrive on Thursday afternoon for the fifth time in four days, the supervisors were able to catch the young boy who pressed the alarm button in the act. The consequences followed on the same day. The unaccompanied minor refugee was reported and – like 14 others – moved to another quarter. According to the responsible Federal Care Agency (BBU), the other boys were selected as “most conspicuous” by the local social workers.

Staff was increased
In total there were probably around 15 false alarms this year, but the alleged perpetrator doesn’t want to have anything to do with the others. “Of course there have been efforts to stop this,” says the BBU, which has to cover the costs of the fire brigade operations. However, access to the alarm button cannot be switched off for fire safety reasons. “These are young people who are bored,” says BBU spokesman Thomas Fussenegger in an OÖN interview. We will try to make the best of it. In any case, the staff has already been increased. Instead of two, four supervisors are now present at night, plus two security employees.

The aim is to reduce occupancy
There will not be an immediate reduction in the number of documents, as demanded by Mayor Gerhard Hintringer (SP) and Integration State Councilor Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer (VP). The BBU is obliged to look after every unaccompanied minor refugee. There are only a few options in terms of capacity, especially since Steyregg is the only accommodation for this group of refugees in Upper Austria and is only 70 percent full. However, the aim is to reduce occupancy, primarily through distribution among federal state facilities. How long the young people stay in Steyregg depends on the individual case. First it must be clarified whether an asylum procedure is permissible, only then can a place in federal state care be found. The quarters there are significantly smaller because the young people are accommodated there for a longer period of time (for the duration of the asylum procedure), while the federal care agency acts as an initial reception center. There are already German courses there.
The transfer of values is evaluated
As far as the behavior of some of the 120 residents towards the fire brigade in general and the female emergency services in particular is concerned, the BBU will review the measures taken so far. In principle, these questions would have first priority and would be communicated to the young people when they first entered the facility. “Of course, this is constantly being evaluated and even more so now,” says Fussenegger. Regarding the atmosphere in the accommodation, he says that the young people are well aware that a limit was crossed on Wednesday evening. The supervisors also discuss this intensively with you. “I think most people will learn something from this.”

Fire service operation with consequences
This refers to the turbulent fire brigade operation on Wednesday, during which the emergency services said they were hindered by the young people. Mind you, the police contradict this account – the OÖN reported in detail. As far as the treatment of female firefighters is concerned, according to consistent statements, there were no physical attacks, but female emergency services did feel harassed by asylum seekers in another false alarm on Tuesday.
“Current developments endanger operations”
In a statement today, the state fire brigade association spoke of a “disruptive action” by the asylum seekers. “The fire departments stand for safety in our country, the last few days with storms and floods have shown this very impressively. But we also need security for our emergency services and self-protection is the priority here. “The current development endangers possible future rescue and firefighting operations,” said state fire brigade commander and fire brigade president Robert Mayer. The state fire brigade association is calling for immediate measures to ensure that such incidents do not happen again.
Mayor condemns behavior of “some young people”
The Steyregger Mayor Gerhard Hintringer (SP) strongly condemns the behavior of some young refugees and thanks the fire department for their tireless commitment and perseverance. But he also emphasizes that he has no decision-making power, which people are admitted to the asylum procedure, which procedures are assessed positively and where asylum seekers are accommodated. Hintringer, in collaboration with the BBU, the executive branch and the volunteer fire departments, is trying to find a way to counteract these developments.
