Countries can send specialists there to study a new strain of the virus, as well as supply medicines.
“Yes, the BRICS countries are ready to support South Africa in all matters regarding the new strain, be it research or the supply of medical supplies. It’s important to stop the Omicron before it’s too late. China, Russia, India and Brazil are all ready to actively help South Africa, now discussions are underway on a practical solution to this issue, ”the politician assured.
India has prepared a shipment of Covishield medical equipment and vaccine for South Africa, she said, if such assistance is needed.
The new variant of the coronavirus, Omicron, has become the dominant variant in South Africa, accounting for more than 70% of all infections in the country last month, the South African Institute for Viral Diseases (NICD) said in a statement.
On December 2, 11.5 thousand new cases of coronavirus infection were registered in South Africa. Every day this figure increases by an average of 22%, the NICD said. For comparison: in mid-November, before the widespread distribution of Omicron, the number of detected cases of COVID-19 infection in the country was 200-300 cases.
