If smokers go ten minutes fast, they have less cravings for nicotine. This is shown by a study by the University of Innsbruck, which was published in the specialist magazine “Psychopharmacology”. “There are a few studies on the effect of indoor exercise units on temporarily abstinent smokers, ours is the first that also includes outdoor activity,” says lead author Stefanie Schöttl.
For the study, 16 smokers who were smoke-free overnight completed ten-minute brisk walking sessions outdoors, corresponding exercise sessions on the treadmill indoors or remained sitting for ten minutes.
Better outdoors than indoors
The addictive desire decreased in both the indoor and outdoor groups throughout the entire exercise session; after ten minutes, the addictive desire in the outdoor group was even reduced slightly more than in the indoor group – while it remained unchanged in the control group . The same applies to withdrawal symptoms and general well-being. The brisk movement unit measurably improved the emotional well-being of the test subjects.
Another difference between indoor and outdoor exercise sessions is the time that passes until the next cigarette. This was 17 minutes for the indoor group and 26 minutes for the study participants who were outdoors.
Smoking is one of the leading preventable causes of illness and death worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 20 percent of people over 15 years old smoked worldwide in 2020.
