Up and away, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. There is no patent recipe for how to relax. There are many individual ways to clear your head and let stress fade into the background. The OÖNachrichten asked around how people who are under a lot of stress in everyday life and are in the public eye do it. Some escape from everyday life into nature – others into the workshop, the boxing ring or simply into the kitchen, where the coffee is waiting.

Robert Mayer, fire brigade president and Upper Austrian state fire brigade commander:

For me, the hectic pace needs the opposite of calm. For me, I find this largely in outdoor exercise, which can sometimes be short. I like listening to music to relax. There are many opportunities to do this, such as in the car, on the train or at home. It creates distraction for me and clears my head for new thoughts and ideas.

The most valuable and important way for me is to be able to withdraw – and for this, home with the family is the best place to recharge my batteries. In my everyday professional life it is important to take myself away from professional topics and focus on something else. There is no fixed ritual for me. The only important thing is to find time for myself.

Primary Jörg Auer, Head of the Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapeutic Medicine at the Neuromed Campus, Kepler University Hospital:

Whenever possible, I take an outdoor route rather than indoors. Or I play a piece on the piano, watch the clouds, enjoy my coffee or a piece of dark chocolate.

Melanie Hofinger, Managing Director of Meritas:

In my everyday life I find relaxation and escape stress with various activities. A walk in nature allows me to clear my head and recharge my batteries. Reading a good book takes me to other worlds and creates a pleasant break.

Exchanging ideas with friends is an important source of relaxation for me – be it a cozy meeting or a phone call. I also love going to concerts because the music creates an emotional connection and offers me a welcome change. These different actions and rituals help me gain new energy in everyday life.

Silvia Schneider, cook, presenter and designer:

The best escape from everyday life is to get out into nature. Nothing is more relaxing than a walk in the mountains. I love the bitter cold and the snow. Afterwards you feel like a new person. Or I box with my trainer Michaela Kotaskova.

She is a professional boxer and is regularly in the ring. With me she doesn’t go into combat quite as hard, but I love the maximum exertion and the sweaty effort. The feeling afterwards is priceless.

Primary Thomas Meindl, Medical Director Schärding Clinic:

It relaxes me when I spend my free time doing something completely different than what I do professionally. I got my pilot’s license at a young age and was passionate about flying. But I no longer do that for environmental reasons.

A few years ago I built myself a wellness area with a sauna and steam bath – from the tiles to the electrics. I really enjoy working with craftsmen.

I’m currently really enjoying working with my model railway. I assemble trains and houses and expand the rail network. I also struggle with controlling everything electronically. This is a challenge that I often have to ask my son for help with.
Otherwise, I really enjoy going for joyrides with my Vespa.

Jessie Ann de Angelo, singer:

Speaking other languages – I speak 13 – is the best way for me to unwind. For more than 34 years, I have gotten into the habit of giving myself this time-out gift every day. Before I leave the house, I spend an hour conversing with a language teacher or I study on my own.

This makes me happy and this feeling stays with me all day long.

It’s also a bit of a break for me when I embroider dresses and blouses – with flowers or abstract patterns.
