Johann Pfaff from Fischlham celebrated his 103rd birthday away from home for the first time. And it happened like this: In mid-September, the oldest resident of the Wels-Land district suffered from persistent pneumonia. The rescue team had to take him to the hospital with a fever of 41 degrees.
After just a week in the Grieskirchen Clinic, Pfaff was able to move to the Kloster Nazareth social center in Stadl-Paura, where he worked hard with the help of nurses to get back to his everyday life without a wheelchair as quickly as possible.
Loyal OÖN reader
In the meantime, he’s running around the house with his walker as always and doing gymnastics exercises, which he watches from ORF’s pre-gymnastics show “Fit with Philipp”. And he still receives a daily subscription to the OÖNachrichten. Johann Pfaff has been one of the most loyal readers of our medium for around 50 years.
On December 21st, Pfaff turned 103 years old. His family, the residents of the social center and the dedicated staff celebrated him and served the sprightly old man the largest piece of his birthday cake.
Pfaff’s CV is known to OÖN readers. As the fifth child and first son of his family, he was born in 1920 in Vukovar in what is now Croatia as a member of the German-speaking Danube Swabians. After his escape in the turmoil at the end of the war, Pfaff settled with his family in Fischlham.
“My grandpa is a fighter,” says granddaughter Christina Gärtner, full of admiration for her grandfather. Despite his old age, he is still surprisingly fit and relatively independent.
