The men are accused of attacking the victim near the Jägerstrasse U6 station with a machete and knives and intentionally killing him. The 31-year-old later died from his massive injuries in the hospital. The indictment is not yet final. In addition to the interrogations of the accused, according to the public prosecutor’s office, witness statements and expert reports led, among other things, to the reconstruction of the crime and the filing of the charges at the Vienna Criminal Regional Court as a youth jury. One of the defendants had not yet reached the age of 21 at the time of the crime.
The background to the crime may have been disputes over drug deals
The background for the bloody crime may have been disputes over drug deals. The Algerian, who was 31 at the time of the crime, and his four accused compatriots who were staying in Austria illegally had known each other for a long time as part of a smaller drug gang in Vienna. As the State Criminal Police Office announced in November, the 31-year-old victim was responsible for distributing the drugs and collecting the money. The alleged main perpetrator is therefore likely to have repeatedly argued with him.

The argument finally escalated on the night of April 20th when the five men met at the Jägerstraße subway station in Vienna-Brigittenau around 1 a.m. According to the prosecution, the victim was pinned to the ground by the men and attacked with a machete and knives.
Three of the suspects fled to France
A 24-year-old Algerian was arrested as part of an immediate search – he had tried to escape the crime scene by jumping into the water on the Danube Canal. But police fished him out of the water. The man has been in custody ever since. The victim died from his injuries in hospital on April 20th. The other three men fled to France, where they were finally arrested in June 2023 and October 2023, respectively, and extradited to Austria.
