Covid in pregnancy: child died after premature birth

Pregnant women who become infected with the coronavirus have a higher risk of a serious course of the disease: This is also what doctors from the Kepler University Hospital (KUK) in Linz say. Around 15 percent of the sick would have to be treated in the hospital, more than five percent in the intensive care unit.

Around 170 women who fell ill with Covid-19 or had recovered from it have already given birth in the KUK. One of these cases ended particularly sadly: the mother was in the intensive care unit and a premature birth occurred. The child did not survive.

Doctors therefore advise pregnant women to vaccinate. The Austrian Society for Gynecology and Obstetrics writes in a statement that immunization with an mRNA vaccine is recommended. However, this is only possible off-label, as there is currently no corresponding approval. The Innsbruck University Clinic refers to 200,000 vaccinated pregnant women whose data were compared with those who had not been vaccinated. There is no difference in terms of complications or the health of the children.
