The boarder collie belonging to a Czech vacationing family got loose from the leash above the middle station on Monday afternoon, fell over a 70-meter-high rock face and has been missing since then, as the Salzburg mountain rescue service reported.
The emergency services were able to manage the slightly injured person “Gaea” on Tuesday at 4 p.m. follow their happy owners. The family had the dog’s minor injuries medically examined at a veterinary clinic. Members of the St. Gilgen mountain rescue center, three mountain rescue dog handlers and a dog handler from the missing dog unit took part in the search. “14 fire brigade members from the Mondseeland drone group and a professional hunter supported us in the search operation”said mountain rescue operations manager Estolf Müller, who was also involved in the search with his dog.
“Gaea” localized thanks to drones
“We finally discovered traces of a dog at the upper end of the so-called Kesselbachgraben”, explained Müller. Using drone flights, the fire department was able to locate a dog under rocks on the thermal imaging camera below a steep rock face at around 1 p.m. The injured and frightened dog had hid under rocks. Rescuing the dog in the extremely steep, rocky, partly icy and avalanche-prone terrain was challenging.
