A girl is only 15 months old and the doctors at the Kepler Clinic have been fighting for her life for weeks. It suffers from a double infection: Covid-19 and an RS virus infection, a respiratory disease that is currently more common in young children. It is precisely these double infections that could become dangerous in the coming weeks, warns Tilman Königswieser from the state crisis team.
“Whether Covid, Influenza or RSV, each of these diseases is already a danger. If they come together, it quickly becomes life-threatening,” says Königswieser. “We are afraid of the coming flu wave, especially because many children have hardly come into contact with the flu virus.” Due to the adherence to the strict safety measures, one was largely spared from the flu epidemic last year. The fact that RSV and influenza are now on the rise is also due to the fact that the security measures at the beginning of autumn were only weak. The Austrian Association of Vaccine Manufacturers also warns of double infections and calls for flu vaccinations. (mis)
