Wels security officer criticized: “Instead of acting, he just reacts”

The incidents on New Year’s Eve brought security officer Gerhard Kroiß back down to earth. The FP deputy mayor is accused, among other things, of offering young people too few integrative measures: “The number of street workers in Wels has been halved,” criticizes SP deputy mayor Klaus Schinninger, who also accuses Kroiß of “just reacting instead of acting.”

The Welser SP calls for the perpetrators to be identified quickly and the law to be consistently applied. Schinninger welcomes the “blue light summit” announced by Kroiß. In addition to summit meetings and reflections, the security of citizens also requires a forward-looking approach in order to prevent such escalations in advance.

The Greens condemn the events on New Year’s Eve. But for city councilor Thomas Rammerstorfer they don’t come as a surprise: “There has already been a lot of damage to property in the Noitzmühle in the last few weeks. The table tennis table was destroyed, the garbage island at the BFI was torched and there were various graffiti related to Hamas.” The Greens lack district work and street work, i.e. outreach youth work as a preventative measure.

Kroiß is planning a double strategy

Security officer Kroiß reacts to the escalating New Year’s Eve with education and deterrence. “It is very important that the perpetrators are investigated. The criminal proceedings will make it clear that the compensation for damage is really worth the money.” At the same time, it must be made clear to the group of perpetrators that arson and barricading fire department entrances endanger people’s lives. Often it is even your own family members.

Kroiß wants to educate people in the migrant cultural associations. For example, the police and fire brigade are highly respected in the local community for many reasons. In addition to representatives of the most important emergency organizations, housing cooperatives are also expected to take part in the “Blue Light Summit” in order to discuss, among other things, the deployment of security personnel.
