The magic word for a healthy back is: “Movement”

Primary Christian Angleitner advises more exercise. (BHS Ried/Hirnschrodt)

The main reason for this is a lack of exercise. This can not only lead to back problems, but also to other chronic illnesses. The foundation is often laid in youth. Already 20 years ago, studies showed that lack of exercise leads to persistent back problems even in ten to fourteen year olds. Poor ergonomics in the workplace often leads to tension and pain among working people. A workplace that has been optimized in terms of occupational medicine and changing your own habits could help. The working position should be changed as often as possible.

“The key to better back health” is, according to Angleitner, regular exercise. “We are all used to brushing our teeth twice a day because we want to avoid toothache. But doing something for your back every day is not a given”says Angleitner. According to Angleitner, targeted spinal exercises at least twice a week and regular endurance training would help prevent back problems or alleviate them by two thirds. However, that only applies “normal” Back pain. In the case of pain after injuries and operations, due to poor posture or neurological deficits, individual therapy is necessary.

For two decades, the Institute for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Ried Hospital has been dedicated to the treatment of complex diseases of the musculoskeletal system. Specialists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and masseurs work together on individual therapy plans. The spectrum ranges from manual medicine to electrical, cold and heat therapies.

“Exercise is always a good idea”

According to information from the hospital, the response from patients has been very positive. More than 90 percent say they achieved measurable improvements through the support. For anglers, exercise is the key to fewer back problems: “Athletic people not only have a lower biological age, but also less back pain. Exercise is always a good idea, and not just for promoting back health.”
