Three young people showed a heart for animals on Wednesday in the municipality of Niederneukirchen (Linz-Land district) – and thus probably saved the life of a tawny owl. The bird had fallen into the ventilation shaft of an abandoned bunker in a forest and was stuck there helplessly at a depth of around three and a half meters. The young people became aware of the animal in distress because they heard strange noises while walking in the forest and raised the alarm.

The emergency services from the Niederneukirchen volunteer fire department responded to rescue the animals. The comrades first tried to free the owl from the shaft with a long pole, but failed.

After consultation with the owner of the facility, it was decided to punch a hole in the thick walls of the bunker. “As you can imagine, a bunker like this is not built using lightweight construction, it’s already massive walls. We had to take turns using the caulking hammer,” says the head of operations at the Niederwaldkirchen fire department. With heavy equipment and combined forces, after a good hour and a half, we managed to get the frightened tawny owl out of its cramped prison unharmed.

Animal rescue teams are now taking care of the pilot. According to the animal rescuers’ assessment, the tawny owl would probably have met a painful end without the quick action of everyone involved.
