According to police, the cause of the fire will not be known for a few days. A technical cause of the fire was ruled out on New Year’s Day, but it was suspected that the fire was intentionally set. Spray candles are being considered as a trigger, but the investigation is ongoing.

The autopsy results of the 21-year-old Lower Austrian woman who died in the flames were available on Wednesday: She died of smoke poisoning. Five local guests are still being treated in hospital after the fire. Four of them received medical care yesterday at the LKH University Hospital Graz – two in the intensive care unit. According to a spokeswoman, her health is stable. Two other local guests are in the normal ward after smoke poisoning and are expected to leave the hospital soon.
A local guest in artificial deep sleep
However, the relative of an affected local guest, who was not present at the time of the fire but was taken to hospital with a suspected heart attack due to the excitement, was given the all-clear: she had not suffered a heart attack. A local guest is still being treated at the LKH Graz II West location and is in artificial deep sleep due to severe smoke poisoning. According to the doctor, the condition is stable.
