Women have changed their eating habits more than men. Consumption remained the same for around half of those surveyed (52 percent), according to the results of the Iglo trend study among 1,015 respondents.
For two thirds, the main reason for not doing so is animal welfare or animal welfare reasons. Health drives 28 percent very much and 41 percent rather, climate and environmental protection is a relevant reason for just over half (21 percent very, 35 percent somewhat). For eight out of ten in the age group over 50, health reasons are crucial; climate protection (52 percent) plays a comparatively minor role – but for younger people (18 to 29 years old), it is exactly the opposite.

Good alternatives
However, not everyone reduces their meat consumption out of ethical convictions; some people have simply developed different preferences or are therefore more considerate of the eating habits of other people in the household. A third also think that meat alternatives are getting better and better.

As an alternative, the most common option is to put more vegetables on the plate – at 87 percent. Around three quarters eat meatless pasta or rice dishes more often, and one in two people increasingly eat lentils, beans or other legumes.
44 percent eat fish more often, and around a quarter say they eat grain cakes, grilled or baked cheese or desserts more often. A fifth choose meat alternatives more often, and a sixth choose tofu.
