The ten-year-old female gorilla Duni gave birth to her first cub shortly after 9 p.m. on Tuesday, the zoo announced on Wednesday. “The birth was quick, and although Duni was a beginner, she managed everything without the slightest difficulty,” said zoo director Miroslav Bobek. The cub drank its mother’s milk the night after its birth.

From Schmiding to Prague

Visitors will be able to see the gorilla offspring in the next few days, but photography will be prohibited out of consideration for the great apes. The gender of the newborn is not yet known. His father is 26 year old Kisumu. He came to Prague from the Schmiding Zoo in Upper Austria in September 2022. According to information, the female gorilla Kijivu is also pregnant by him.

Threatened with extinction

Western lowland gorillas are critically endangered, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List. The number of animals in the wild is declining. In nature, this gorilla species lives in the rainforests and swamps of Central Africa. The Prague Zoo has long been one of the most visited attractions in the Czech Republic.
