Those responsible for the study now discovered a difference in urine samples. The concentration of certain amino acids was significantly lower in sick people than in healthy people. “It is important that this is a pilot study,” emphasizes Günter Weiss, director of the Innsbruck University Hospital, when asked by OÖNachrichten.
Signal for further research
Among other things, the samples from 25 people with Long Covid were compared with those from eight healthy controls. “The results show that central biochemical metabolic pathways may be disturbed in some patients,” said Weiss, but qualified the significance: “We have initially only carried out these analyzes as part of a study and cannot offer them routinely for the time being.”
According to Weiss, this initial work is nevertheless a signal to plan further studies in this direction in order to better understand the spectrum of the disease in the medium term and, if necessary, to provide targeted help to those affected.
