The Perchten are on the loose and come to the Steinbach town square from all directions on Raunacht on January 5th. With frightening carved masks, skins, fire and smoke, hundreds of so-called Schiachperchten will transform the tranquil Steyrtal community into a cauldron and spread goosebumps. A little fear is part of the spectacle, but no one really needs to be afraid of the traditional customs.
The Perchten not only drive away the evil winter spirits during their runs, but also bring the audience happiness and health when they touch their horse’s tails in the still very young year of 2024.
More than 250 Perchten from all over Austria will captivate the audience in Steinbach. Food and drink are provided.
The event is rounded off with the unique fireworks display and the big party in the Perchtenhölle. “We are looking forward to a spectacular evening with lots of visitors,” says Patrick Löffler, chairman of the Steyrtaler Perchten, who have been organizing and hosting the gruesome goings-on since 2000.
To drive away dark forces, demonic masks were once required – the Schiachperchten. The Perchtenlaufen is a monument to a long-gone natural religion whose roots go back to the Stone Age. The Perchten are also closely linked to the Raunächte. This is how the twelve nights between Christmas and the Day of the Three Kings on January 6th are called. The Raunächte have their roots in Germanic and Celtic traditions.
On this day, guests can particularly enjoy the nostalgic arrival and departure with the Steyrtalbahn. Entry at the Steinbach town square is at 5 p.m. The run starts at 6:30 p.m. Voluntary donations are requested.
Castle devils dance in the Kremstal
A total of around 600 Perchten are expected at the two Perchten runs on Friday, January 5th, in Micheldorf and Steinbach an der Steyr. Under the motto “Fire and smoke – that is our custom”, the “Kremstaler Burg Teufeln” under chairman Gerald Edlinger are organizing the fifth Kremstaler Perchtenlauf in the Micheldorf town center with 20 guest groups at 7 p.m. More than 350 active participants are expected to create an unforgettable evening for the audience. Afterwards there will be an after-show party with a DJ in the “Geigenbauer-Halle”. The Perchtenlauf will also be broadcast live in the Geigenbauer Hall.
