Unemployment rose sharply in December

Winter unemployment in the construction industry is hitting.

The numbers have increased significantly in Grieskirchen, Wels and Eferding. But the values ​​are also significantly higher compared to the previous year.

At the end of December, 4,780 job seekers were registered with the AMS Wels, 541 more than in the previous year. This results in a regional unemployment rate of 7.2 percent (6.5 percent in 2022). “We are feeling the slowdown in the labor market,” says AMS head Othmar Kraml. This is particularly noticeable in unskilled occupations, in the metal and electrical sectors as well as in office jobs. With a number of 2,592, there are significantly fewer vacancies (–844 compared to the previous year), especially in unskilled work, office jobs and in the leasing sector.

Winter break in the construction industry

In Grieskirchen the unemployment rate is currently 4.8 percent, compared to 4 percent last year. In absolute numbers, 1,470 people have pre-registered, and the majority of the new recruits come from the construction industry. The new AMS head Barbara Kundtner reports that 700 of them have a confirmation of employment: “Furthermore, as of the end of December there are 1,014 open positions and there are 258 open apprenticeship positions for 54 apprenticeship seekers.”

Unemployment in Eferding rose by just 0.3 percentage points to 4 percent, where 615 people are registered. 157 people are currently undergoing training, a slight increase compared to the previous year. There are currently around 300 vacancies registered at AMS Eferding.
