Austrians live longer and stay healthy longer. Nevertheless, around two thirds of the population suffer from chronic diseases: This is evident from the 2022 health report, which the Ministry of Health published yesterday. According to this, women and men in Austria have been living an average of two and 2.9 years longer respectively since 2005. They also stay healthy longer: men spend 7.4 and women 7.8 more years of life in good health than in 1991.
The ministry still sees a need for action: 66 percent – around 4.9 million people – suffered from a permanent illness or chronic health problem in 2019, compared to 62 percent in 2014. The problems are largely due to an unhealthy lifestyle, such as insufficient exercise, an unbalanced diet and alcohol and nicotine consumption.

In total, chronic illnesses mean that women currently spend 19.5 years of life and men 16.4 years of life in fair to poor health. Overall, since 2019, male newborns can expect to live in good health for 63.1 years and female newborns for 64.7 years. That’s an increase of more than seven years since 1991.
Health literacy
According to the report, one in two people has limited health literacy. People with low incomes are disproportionately affected. The study once again shows the major influence of income and education on health. People with little formal education therefore spend more years of life in mediocre or poor health.
Preventive examinations are currently only used by around 15 percent of people in Austria – and the trend is rising slightly.
