A storm with speeds of up to 111 km/h swept across Vienna’s city center on Thursday. There were an “extraordinary” number of missions for the Vienna professional fire brigade. Several federal gardens were closed for safety reasons. According to Geosphere Austria, the Semmering/Sonnwendstein weather station recorded the highest wind peak in Austria on Thursday at 134 km/h. Accordingly, the wind will decrease significantly everywhere on Friday night.
The focus of the storm on Thursday afternoon was in eastern Austria. In Vienna, Geosphere Austria recorded wind peaks of up to 103 km/h on the Hohe Warte. On the Hohe Warte, such wind peaks occur every one to three years. In downtown Vienna, the 110.9 km/h measured was the fourth highest value since measurements began here in 1985.
Almost 100 km/h in Upper Austria
On the Feuerkogel in Upper Austria the wind blew at up to 130 km/h. Due to the storm, operations in the ski areas were partially limited and some facilities were out of operation.
But not only in the mountains, the gusts also reached considerable strength in the Hausruck and Traunviertel: In Wolfsegg (Vöcklabruck district) 97 km/h were measured in the afternoon, in Kremsmünster (Kirchdorf an der Krems) it was 92 km/h and in Vöcklabruck 88.9 km/h. However, the state fire brigade command only reported isolated incidents.

Next weather warning from Saturday
According to data from Geosphere Austria, in the state capital Linz it was “only” 57 km/h. The storm warning is valid in Upper Austria until Thursday evening, then the weather should calm down before the next weather warning comes into force on Saturday. A yellow snow warning applies throughout Upper Austria from Saturday afternoon to Monday morning. A Mediterranean low brings wintry conditions to the country. On Saturday the snowfall limit in the east and south is still over 1000 m in places, on Sunday it will gradually snow down into all the valleys and lowlands. Amounts of between 10 and 25 cm of fresh snow are expected in many inhabited areas by Monday morning, and significantly more in the mountains.

Many missions for the Vienna professional fire brigade
The Vienna professional fire brigade worked on around 50 storm operations in the afternoon, as a spokesman explained on request. In total, the fire department had been called out around 180 times by 1:30 p.m. However, the majority of these are limited to loose components, fallen objects or trees. Although the spokesman emphasized that the number of missions for the Vienna professional fire brigade was “already extraordinary”. “This is definitely a challenge for us,” he said.
Augarten, Volksgarten, Burggarten closed
Augarten, Volksgarten and Burggarten were closed on Thursday due to the storm warning, as was the southern part of Schönbrunn Palace Park. The Meiereitor and the Maria-Theresien-Tor were closed. “We ask for caution, as falling branches must always be expected,” it said on the Federal Gardens homepage. The Schönbrunn Zoo was open, but the Tirolerhof entrance was closed. It was announced that the federal gardens would be opened on Friday morning after a round of inspections.
The Wiener Linien also warned of the storm. “Please pay particular attention to your surroundings on the way to and from public transport today! Due to the violent storm, there may be delays in the network,” they informed on X (formerly Twitter).
The FF Wiener Neudorf (Mödling district) reported several missions in the afternoon. Almost at the same time, storm damage had to be dealt with in the town and in the industrial center of Lower Austria South. The height rescue group had to take action on the roof of the Palmers high-rise “to secure a threateningly swaying advertising sign at a height of around 50 meters.”
