As Defense Minister Minoru Kihara announced on Thursday on the online service X (formerly Twitter), a total of 122 survivors had been rescued by Wednesday. He further explained that on this “crucial day” the number of rescue workers would be increased to 4,600.
Thousands of firefighters, soldiers and police from all over Japan came to Ishikawa Prefecture after the earthquake on New Year’s Day to help with the clean-up work and search for other people trapped. They are supported by specially trained rescue dogs.
84 deaths, 330 injured
According to authorities, the number of confirmed deaths has now risen to 84, and at least 330 more people were injured. 79 people are considered missing.
The Japanese main island of Honshu was shaken by a severe earthquake of magnitude 7.5 as well as dozens of aftershocks and hit by tsunami waves on New Year’s Day. Countless houses collapsed or were damaged on the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture. Roads became impassable and a major fire destroyed a historic market district in the city of Wajima.
