From 1984 to 2016, Ehalt was the city’s science officer. Among other things, he directed the Vienna lecture program. He organized the lecture series for 30 years. During his time in office, Ehalt organized 1,500 events, 300 book publications and numerous TV and radio collaborations. At the Institute for Economic and Social History, he worked, among other things, as an assistant and lecturer.
“Ehalt was a successful popular educator for decades, especially as the inventor of the ever-popular Vienna lectures,” said his former student and now the Green Party’s culture and science spokeswoman, Eva Blimlinger, in tribute to him. “Above all, he was also a courageous, great teacher and supporter. Generations of history students remember his seminars at Sophienalpe, where presentations, research and discussions took place.”
Fight against myths and propaganda
The Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) also mourns the loss of its honorary member Ehalt: “The fight against myths, prejudices and political propaganda was extremely important to him, and his trust in the enlightening power of science was unbroken,” said ÖAW President Heinz Faßman. “Ehalt worked tirelessly for science and the communication of its findings. His death is a great loss for the scientific community.”
Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) also spoke in a broadcast of a “great loss for science, our city and all people who were lucky enough to know him.” Vienna is losing a scientific luminary and a humanitarian who always knew how to stimulate and satisfy the thirst for knowledge of old and young, Ludwig paid tribute to the deceased.
