Danish television showed scores of people in Copenhagen standing out in the snow and waving to Margrethe (83) as she drove past in her gold-plated carriage.
At the annual reception, around 1,000 invited guests present their New Year’s wishes to the royal family. The monarch’s traditional carriage ride from her residence Amalienborg Palace to Christiansborg Palace leads through the center of Copenhagen.

Does Frederik keep the tradition?
In 2025, however, it will not be Margrethe, but her son Frederik who will be sitting in the carriage – if he keeps this tradition. In her New Year’s speech on December 31st, Margrethe surprisingly announced that she wanted to abdicate as queen after 52 years on the throne.
She cited a back operation last year as the reason for this, which she survived well but which made her think. Next Sunday, January 14th, the 55-year-old Crown Prince is set to take over the throne as King Frederik X.
