UAE changes weekend days to attract investors

“The United Arab Emirates is the first country in the world to introduce a shorter work week than five days,” in effect elsewhere, according to WAM.

The federation of seven emirates will become the only Gulf country with a weekend on Saturdays and Sundays, a decision that allows it to align itself with most countries outside the Arab world.

“This extended weekend is part of the Emirates government’s efforts to improve work-life balance … as well as to increase the country’s economic competitiveness results.” Meanwhile, the quest to attract investment and global business is being targeted.

The “national work week” will be mandatory for the public sector as of January 1. The change will mark a further step in the efforts of the United Arab Emirates, of which Abu Dhabi and Dubai are a part, to maintain its status as the Gulf’s pre-eminent business hub.

“This will align the UAE with global markets and make it easier for international corporations to do business,” said Nabil Alyousuf, CEO of Dubai-based International Advisory Group. “This will increase the number of days we do business with the rest of the world, which will boost trade.”
