The fraudster announced that a detective would come to her to investigate. After initial contact by telephone, the man actually showed up at the lady’s apartment and pretended to be a police officer. A little odyssey began for the 75-year-old: The fake police officer instructed the woman that she now had to drive to all the affected bank branches for the purpose of securing evidence. She withdrew money from several branches and took valuables from the safes there. The pensioner then handed over the valuables to the fraudster, always outside the banks.
Estimated total damage in the six-figure range
After the final handover, the fake police officer named a bank branch where the 75-year-old was supposed to get all of her items back. However, this did not happen and the lady became suspicious. She then contacted the real police. The estimated total damage is in the low six-figure range.
In this context, the Vienna police warned again about the fraudsters and appealed to protect older people in the area and to warn again and again about a wide variety of fraudulent schemes by the “fake police officers”.
Police tips
- The police never demand cash or valuables for safekeeping, protection or evidence.
- End suspicious phone calls and dial 133.
- Do not provide any details about family or financial circumstances.
- Don’t let strangers into your apartment.
- Never give money or gold to strangers.
- Talk to your family about these fake police officers. Older generations in particular are affected.
