On the night of Epiphany around 4 a.m., a 26-year-old from Flachgau collided with two cows in his car in the municipality of St. Gilgen. The free-roaming cattle had strayed onto the road at dawn. The young man saw the animals too late, touched them and suffered injuries of an unspecified degree. The rescue took him to the hospital. Both animals died in the collision.
Fire brigade on duty for hours
The driver’s breathalyzer test was negative and the car remained badly damaged in an adjacent field. The Abersee fire engine, which was deployed with 25 firefighters, reported that the cows had opened their gate near the road shortly before the accident. When the emergency services arrived, the cows on the road were already dead. The operation, including clearing the road, took around two hours.
