According to police, the pedestrian was walking with his 24-year-old companion on Schönbrunner Strasse in Meidling when he wanted to cross a protective path. According to initial investigations, the pedestrians crossed the street at a red light – the 73-year-old driver was unable to brake in time and the fatal collision occurred.
The 33-year-old died on the spot from his serious injuries shortly after 3 a.m. According to police, the 24-year-old woman was seriously injured. Emergency services from the Vienna professional rescue service provided the accident victim with emergency medical care and took him to a hospital. The driver of the car, who had the green light on his way into the city, was uninjured.
The traffic accident command of the Vienna State Transport Department took over the investigation into the accident. Further investigations are being carried out by the responsible police station.
