Sending messages via messenger systems is becoming increasingly popular in Austria. In the second quarter of the previous year, compatriots sent a total of 24.2 billion chat messages, around 900 million more than in the previous quarter. This emerges from data from the telecommunications regulatory authority RTR.
“If you apply the 24.2 billion chat messages to the Austrian population of around nine million people, 2,688 chat messages were sent per person in Austria, which is almost 30 per day,” says RTR boss Klaus Steinmaurer, who comes from Upper Austria, and adds : “Since we’ve only been collecting data on chat messages for a short time, we don’t have any more recent values yet. However, I assume that the number will continue to rise sharply.”
Emails and SMS are not counted as chat messages; these are evaluated separately. There were 984 million emails in Austria in the second quarter, as many as in the previous quarter. According to the latest information, around 300 million SMS messages, which are being replaced by chat services, were sent.
Demand for fiber optic connections (fiber to the home) also increased in the second quarter. According to RTR, there were 279,000 active connections, around 20,000 more than in the first quarter. Steinmaurer expects the upward trend to continue. In the ranking of the ten largest FTTH providers, A1 is ahead, ahead of Energie AG and kabelplus. Places four to seven are occupied by Mass Response, Hutchison Drei, Innsbrucker Kommunalbetriebe and Wien Energie.
